Adoption Process

Step 1: Submit an Application Complete the adoption application form for the animal you are interested in. Applications help us better understand your home, lifestyle, experience, and what type of animal would be the best fit for you and your family.

Step 2: Application Review

Our team carefully reviews each application to ensure the best possible placement for every animal. We consider factors such as lifestyle, household environment, experience level, activity level, and compatibility with children or other pets. Prior to your application you will receive next steps if approved Within 2 weeks. 

Submitting an application does not guarantee approval or placement.

Step 3: Reference & Background Checks 

Depending on the animal and situation, we may contact:

• Veterinary references

• Personal references

• Landlords or housing providers

These checks help confirm that the animal will be entering a safe, stable, and suitable environment.

Step 4: Meet & Greet  

Approved applicants may be invited to meet the animal either virtually or in person. This allows both the adopter and the animal to interact in a safe and comfortable setting before final decisions are made.

Some animals may require multiple visits prior to approval.

Step 5: Home Check 

A home check may be completed before adoption approval. Home checks are not intended to judge or criticize applicants — they exist to ensure the environment is safe and appropriate for the specific animal being adopted.

Home checks may be conducted:

• In person

• Virtually through video call

• Through submitted photos/videos

We may look for:

• Secure fencing or containment

• Safe indoor spaces

• Proper sleeping/rest areas

• Hazard prevention

• Appropriate space for the animal’s needs

Step 6: Approval Decision 

Once all steps have been completed, applicants will receive an approval or denial decision from our team within 4 weeks (1 Months Time). If approved, adoption paperwork and payment information will be provided.

If an application is not approved for a specific animal, another animal may still be suggested if we believe it would be a better fit.

Step 7: Finalizing the Adoption 

After paperwork is completed and adoption fees are received, arrangements will be made for pickup, transportation, or delivery depending on the situation.

Adopters will also receive important information regarding:

• Medical records

• Feeding routines

• Medications

• Behaviour notes

• Ongoing care recommendations

Our goal is to place every animal into a safe, responsible, and permanent home. While every application is reviewed individually, applicants should expect the following considerations during the review process:

• Stable and safe living environment

• Ability to provide proper veterinary care

• Financial readiness for long-term care expenses

• Appropriate time commitment

• Compatibility with current pets and household members

• Understanding of the species, breed, or animal’s needs

• Willingness to provide patience, training, and adjustment time

Certain animals may have additional requirements depending on their medical, behavioural, or emotional needs.

Urgent or special-needs placements may require additional time. 

All cases will be started within 2 weeks.

About Home Checks

Home checks are designed to help ensure a successful and safe adoption for both the animal and adopter. They are not pass/fail inspections based on appearance or perfection.

Our priority is safety, preparedness, and appropriate accommodations for the specific animal being adopted.

Home checks may include:

• Verification of secure spaces

• Review of fencing or enclosures

• Discussion about routines and expectations

• Identification of potential safety hazards

• Confirmation that all household members are aware of the adoption

Applicants are encouraged to ask questions during the process.

FAQs

Does submitting an application guarantee adoption?

No. Applications are reviewed carefully to ensure the best match for both the animal and adopter.

Can I apply for multiple animals?

Yes. However, approval for one animal does not automatically guarantee approval for another

Are adoption fees refundable?

Adoption fees are generally non-refundable unless otherwise stated in writing.

Do you adopt outside of Ontario?

Placement availability may vary depending on transportation, legal requirements, and the specific animal.

Can I adopt if I rent my home?

Yes, provided pets are permitted and approval from the landlord or housing provider can be verified if requested.

What if my current pets are not spayed or neutered?

Applications are reviewed individually. Certain exceptions may apply depending on medical recommendations or circumstances.

What happens if the adoption does not work out?

Animals adopted through Second Chance Sanctuary must be returned to the organization if the adopter can no longer provide care. Rehoming independently without approval may violate adoption agreements.

Can I place an animal on hold?

Holds may be considered in certain situations but are not guaranteed.
